MEASURING THE DEGREE OF SUSTAINABILITY AS A RESPONSE TO DEVELOPMENT BY USING GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM

Abstract: Sustainable development has long been a global issue and becomes a priority for every nation. However; in practice, the complexity of definition, the scale of measurement, and the indicators of sustainability, all together, make a challenge to measure sustainable development in a whole. For policy makers, we need a method of assessment that is fast, simple and easy to identify the degree of sustainability of an area in order to provide information of development impacts. Four dimensions of sustainable development for Commission on Sustainable Development covering social, economic, environmental, and institutional indicators are used to assess the sustainability at the local level. Indicator filtering is done for down scaling and indexing sustainability on the basis of national context. AGIS- based technique for assessing the sustainability status simply by aggregating and weighing the pillars of sustainable development can be an option to assess the sustainability with in administrative boundaries that are important in policy decision – making processes.
